Since today is Tsikopempti (in other cultures Mardi Gras or Fat Thursday), it is time for a barbecue! And mpiftekia (Greek burger patties) on barbecue are the best thing (together with souvlakia)! So here is our recipe:
Ingredients:
1 kg of minced meat (veal or beef)
1 big onion very finely chopped
1 teaspoon of dry oregano
2 tablespoons of oil
1 egg
Around 200 grams of bread (if it is old bread even better) without the crust
Salt and pepper to taste
Optionally: a bit of finely chopped parsley (around half to one bunch), a bit of finely chopped mint, a bit of smashed garlic (or a pinch of garlic powder)
Instructions:
Put the bread in a big bowl of water and let it soak for about 10 minutes or till the bread has become soft. Then strain the bread very well and throw the water.
In a big bowl, put all the ingredients together (the meat, the egg, the bread, the onion, the oregano, the oil, salt and pepper and the optional ingredients if you like). Mix well with the hands till you get a homogeneous mixture.
Then shape each of the mpiftekia at the size of a typical burger. Grill them for around 15 minutes or till they are not any more raw (important because we have put egg), flipping them often so they do not get burned on one side.
They can also be cooked in the oven. Eat them with a nice Greek salad or tzatziki or fried potatoes! After this great feast, the desert of the day is galaktompoureko. Enjoy!
