In Greece, a wolf is considered to be an animal that can get extremely hungry. When a person feels like eating big quantities of food, we use the expression ‘πεινάει σα λύκος’. This can be literally translated to ‘he is as hungry as a wolf’.
In the old days, hungry wolves would attack entire flocks of sheep in various Greek villages and leave no sheep alive behind. Therefore, the Greeks associated extreme hunger with the appetite of a wolf. Can you think of a person that is often as hungry as a wolf or do you feel sometimes this way?
